Lucy Foley — The Hunting Party

“My favorite kind of whodunit, kept me guessing all the way through, and reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best — with an extra dose of acid.” (Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent Patient)

И снова рекомендация не обманула — it kept me guessing all the way through, когда же начнётся детектив.

It would almost be amusing, I think. To watch him falter, to continue to dig himself into this particular grave. Amusing if, that is, he weren’t my husband, the man to whom I have given over a decade—all my youth—and if I weren’t really the butt of this particular joke.

As we near the building a big cackle of laughter erupts from somewhere above. I glance up and see a group of men on top of the Folly’s battlements, looking down at us.

There’s a mocking note to the laughter and I’m suddenly very aware of the state of my clothes and hair. I’m convinced that we’re **the butt of their joke**.

butt — target of a joke, object of ridicule, from earlier sense target for shooting practice, turf-covered mound against which an archery target was set, from Old French but “aim, goal, end, target” of an arrow.
