Удивительные совпадения продолжаются — только собралась рассказать, почему во фразе «Why is a sash-window like a woman in labour?» всё не так просто, и сразу вспомнила трагикомичную короткометражку, которая всё объясняет. А в ней снимается тот самый обаятельный американец, он же актёр русского театра и кино.

Ну и совсем невероятное — впервые о том, что «woman in labour» значит, что женщина рожает, я узнала из рассказа, в котором тоже идёт речь об автомобильной пробке. Там парень опаздывает в роддом, видит на бампере перед собой явно несуществующий номер и ради веселья звонит на него. А дальше снова начинается conundrum:

“Hello,” a young woman’s voice said hurriedly before continuing after a short gasp. “1-800-EAT-SHIT, may I help you?”

“Hello?”

“Yes,” the same woman’s voice replied. “1-800-EAT-SHIT, may I help YOU?”

“Am I imagining this?” I asked, as I switched the phone to my left ear.

“No, sir. What is the problem?”

“Well ...

I can’t get by him because there’s a ditch to my right and a slew of oncoming traffic to my left.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, sir.”

“So ... is there anything you can do?”

“Well,” she replied with a monotone voice, sounding as if she had answered the same question a million times, “are you asking for advice?”

“Couldn’t hurt.”

“Okay,” she responded. “Being that our company is 1-800-EAT-SHIT, that’s the only thing I can recommend you do.”

“What? What the fuck is wrong with you people? How about 1-800-FUCK YOU!”

“That’s a different company, sir,” she replied calmly. “I might be able to transfer you if you’d like to hold.”

Роды — то ещё веселье, так что «labour» для их описания подходит даже в прямом смысле тяжелой работы. Но на самом деле это схватки, а сhildbirth, also known as labour and delivery, is the ending of pregnancy where one or more babies leaves a woman’s uterus by passing through the vagina. Теперь понятно, почему никто не хочет работать курьером.
