Так я узнала, что «bark up the wrong tree» — про собаку, которая лает не на то дерево, потому что пошла по ложному следу. А вот с чем её перепутал Мервин, даже не знаю. Похоже на «go up the blind alley» — зайти в тупик. Или на «go down the wrong alley» — сойти с пути истинного. Или... нет, так я никогда не дочитаю.
